Hop Latent Viroid (HLVd) RT-PCR
- Sample Collection – place samples in a clean ziplock bag and label sample ID
- 5-10 (max) leaves, ideally symptomatic suspect leaves, plants. Can combine different plants. if needed.
- Or send Roots (2g is enough) – roots are known to have better detection of HLVd. Roots don’t necessarily need to be cleaned to send to us. But free of the majority of dirt is helpful.
The following is the interpretation for HLVd semi-quantitative analysis which is based on the signal strength of RT-PCR results |

RFU = relative fluorescence unit |

Result |
qPCR value |
Interpretation |
Risk |
Very low |
RFU <0.1. |
The plant may be just infected |
HLVd has not spread to the whole plant |
Low |
RFU > 0.1, but <0.5. |
The plant was recently infected |
HLVd may not spread to the whole plant |
Moderate |
RFU >0.5, but <1.0. |
HLVd has spread to other parts of plant |
may transmit to other plants |
High |
RFU>1.0. |
HLVd has spread to the entire plant |
transmitted to other plants |
