Black Soldier Fly Frass 3-2-2 (Fine Grade)

Biologically Active Fertilizer | Fast-Integrating Nutrients | Supports Plant Resilience

Black Soldier Fly Frass (Fine Grade) is a finely screened, insect-derived fertilizer made from the natural byproduct of black soldier fly larvae. It delivers a balanced 3-2-2 nutrient profile, along with organic matter, beneficial microbes, and natural chitin to support soil health and plant performance.

The fine grade integrates quickly into soil and water, providing a small amount of immediately available nutrients alongside slower, microbially released nutrition. This makes it ideal for soil blending, topdressing, and water-based applications.

🌱 Key Benefits

• Provides both fast- and slow-release nutrients for steady, season-long feeding

• Supports healthy soil biology and nutrient cycling

• Helps improve soil structure and moisture retention

• Encourages strong root development and plant vigor

• Fine grade blends easily into soil or water for versatile use

• Low risk of burn when used as directed

🌿 Best For

Soil Mixes & Custom Blends
Ideal for growers who build or amend their own soil. The fine texture distributes evenly for consistent nutrient availability throughout the mix.

Indoor & Container Growers
Perfect for houseplants, herbs, and small-space growing where precise, easy-to-mix inputs are preferred.

Water-Based Applications
Well-suited for preparing frass extracts for soil drenches or foliar sprays.

Transplants & Seed Starting
Blends easily into planting mixes to support early root development and soil biology from the start.

Gardeners Looking for Faster Integration
Integrates more quickly than granules, making it a good choice when you want nutrients to become available sooner.

💧 How to Use (Fine Grade)

Garden Beds & Soil Applications

Apply up to 400 g per 1 m² (approx. 10 ft²) and mix into the top 2–5 cm (1–2") of soil.
Water after application.

Apply 3–4 times per year during the growing season.

Topdressing (Containers)

Apply 10–15 mL (2–3 tsp) per plant, or 5–10 mL per 4 L (1–2 tsp per gallon) of soil.
Lightly mix into the soil surface and water after application.

Apply every 3–4 weeks during active growth.

Soil Pre-Mix

Blend 45 mL (3 tbsp) per 4 L (1 gallon) of soil prior to planting.

For bulk soil mixes, apply up to 3.5 kg (7.7 lb) per cubic yard, mixed evenly throughout.

💧 Frass Extract (Water-Based Application)

Add 2 tbsp of frass to approximately 10 L (2.5 gallons) of water, or 4 tbsp per 5 gallons.

Option 1: Add directly to water and strain after steeping
Option 2: Place frass in a mesh tea bag before steeping

Allow to steep for 4–12 hours, agitating occasionally.

Strain if needed, then apply as a soil drench or foliar spray.

Apply every 2–4 weeks as needed.

Application Notes

  • A fine mesh bag or filter can be used to contain or strain the frass
  • Our 400-micron mesh tea bag allows beneficial compounds and microbes to pass through while reducing sediment
  • Always strain thoroughly before foliar spraying to prevent clogging your sprayer
  • Aeration is not required — simple steeping is sufficient
  • Use immediately after preparation for best results

🔬 About Chitin

Plant roots can detect chitin fragments in the soil through specialized receptors. Because chitin is associated with fungi and insects, it acts as a natural signal that can trigger defense pathways. This process, known as induced resistance or immune priming, helps plants respond more effectively to stress, supporting stronger, more resilient growth.
