Biochar – Large Chunk (6–25mm)

Soil Structure • Microbial Habitat • Long-Term Amendment

Our Large Biochar is made using ONLY clean forestry residuals, processed through a controlled pyrolysis system to produce a stable, porous carbon material with coarse chunk structure. With an average particle size of 6–25mm, it’s perfect for use in no-till beds, orchard zones, compost piles, or living soil blends where airflow, nutrient retention, and microbial support are essential.

This biochar is uncharged, meaning it contains no nutrients or microbes when dry. It should be inoculated before planting—either by mixing with compost, soaking in compost tea, or incorporating into soil and allowing 2–4 weeks for natural colonization.

🌿 Benefits

  • Enhances drainage, structure, and root zone porosity

  • Provides long-term habitat for beneficial microbes and fungi

  • Holds nutrients in place for gradual release to plants

  • Supports biological diversity and active soil life

  • Helps buffer soil pH and reduce nutrient leaching

  • Can aid in soil remediation by adsorbing contaminants and odors

🌱 How to Use

Inoculation Options

  • Compost Charging: Mix 1:1 with compost or worm castings. Keep moist and allow to sit for 2–3 weeks.

  • Compost Tea Soak: Soak in an actively aerated compost tea or nutrient solution for 24–48 hours.

  • Direct Soil Charging: Blend into soil ahead of planting and allow 2–4 weeks to begin colonizing.

Application Rates

  • Garden Beds: Add 2–10cm and incorporate into the top 20cm of soil (10cm for poor soils)

  • Potting Mixes: Use at 5–25% by volume depending on blend goals

  • Compost or Worm Systems: Add 5–15% by volume to increase microbial habitat and reduce nutrient loss

🧪 Specs

  • Particle Size: 6–25mm (Large Chunk)

  • Carbon: >75%

  • Ash: <10%

  • pH: ~9.4 (before inoculation)

Tip: Large biochar is dusty—wear gloves when handling to avoid black residue on hands.
