Protozoan Infusion Blend is a dry blend of organic kelp meal and organic alfalfa meal, used to brew an aerated tea rich in beneficial protozoa. Brewed and applied to your soil, it introduces an active protozoan population that helps cycle nutrients through the soil food web. It suits living-soil beds, raised beds, containers, and any garden where you want to build and maintain healthy soil biology.
How It Works
Protozoa are microscopic organisms that feed on soil bacteria and fungi. As they graze, they take in the nutrients locked in those microbes and release them as plant-available nitrogen, phosphorus, and other nutrients, right in the root zone. This grazing is a core part of the soil food web and a major driver of natural nutrient cycling. Soil protozoa come in three main groups (flagellates, amoebae, and ciliates), and a full brew develops all three.
Kelp meal and alfalfa meal carry native protozoa on the plant material. During brewing, the meals first feed a bloom of bacteria, and the protozoa then multiply as they graze it. The result is a living infusion you apply directly to your soil.
This matters most in raised beds and containers. Contained soil is cut off from the surrounding earth that would normally resupply it, so its protozoa populations decline over time. Regular applications replenish them and keep nutrient cycling active from one crop to the next.
How to Brew It
The easiest way to get set up is our Compost Tea Equipment Kit, which includes a food-grade pail, an air pump, two air stones, hoses, and a brew bag. To put together your own setup, you will need:
-
A food-grade 5-gallon pail
-
An air pump sized for your brew volume
-
Airline tubing to connect the pump to the air stones
-
Air stones (use two for a 5-gallon pail)
-
Non-chlorinated water. Chlorine and chloramine will kill the microbes, so dechlorinate municipal water first with any suitable filter. (We carry the GrowRite Garden Hose Filter if you need one.)
Steps:
-
Fill a 5-gallon pail about three-quarters full (roughly 16 L). Add 15 mL of blend per 1 L of water (about 240 mL for 16 L) to the brew bag, and place the bag in the pail.
-
Add the air stones, connect them to the air pump, and run the pump continuously.
-
Brew at room temperature for 48 to 60 hours. A shorter brew gives a balance of bacteria and protozoa, while a longer brew is more protozoan-dominant.
-
Remove the bag and apply the tea to your soil within a few hours of finishing the brew.
