Malted Barley is a simple, cost-effective amendment for supporting biologically active soil. It contains one ingredient: organically grown, non-GMO barley that has been germinated under controlled conditions and kiln-dried to stop further growth while retaining much of the enzyme activity developed during germination.

Because it has already been sprouted, Malted Barley requires no home germination. Grind the whole kernels immediately before use and apply them as a top dress or prepare a short enzyme extraction.

Suitable for living-soil containers, raised beds, houseplants, outdoor gardens, greenhouses, no-till systems, and market-garden beds.

What Malted Barley contributes to soil

Ground Malted Barley provides organic matter, carbohydrates, protein, fiber, and naturally developed enzymes that support active soil biology. In moist soil, it becomes a food source for bacteria, fungi, and other decomposers involved in organic-matter breakdown and nutrient cycling.

Its principal enzymes include:

  • Alpha-amylase, which breaks large starch molecules into shorter carbohydrate chains.

  • Beta-amylase, which acts on starch chains and releases maltose.

  • Limit dextrinase, which helps break down branched starch compounds.

  • Beta-glucanases, which act on beta-glucans found in plant cell walls.

  • Proteases and peptidases, which break proteins into smaller peptides and amino acids.

This combination of organic matter and naturally developed enzymes makes Malted Barley especially useful in biologically active soils, where microorganisms help process organic materials and cycle nutrients through the root zone. By supporting active soil biology and nutrient cycling, Malted Barley helps create the conditions for strong roots, vigorous growth, and healthy plant development throughout the growing cycle.

Why we sell it whole

Whole kernels are better protected from moisture and oxygen than pre-ground barley. Grinding exposes more of the grain to air, increasing the potential for moisture absorption, oxidation, stale odours, and loss of freshness during storage.

Grinding immediately before application provides fresh material with more surface area for water and soil organisms to access.

How to use Malted Barley

Grind only what you need immediately before use. Process the whole kernels in a blender, coffee grinder, or grain mill until they reach a flour-like consistency.

Avoid breathing airborne grain dust when grinding or handling the powder.

Top dressing: Apply approximately 1 tablespoon of ground Malted Barley per gallon (4 L) of soil. Sprinkle the powder evenly over the soil, lightly mix it into the surface, cover with mulch when appropriate, and water thoroughly. Apply every two to four weeks during active growth, adjusting the frequency to suit your plants and soil.

Enzyme extraction: Mix 1 to 2 tablespoons (15 to 30 mL) of freshly ground Malted Barley with 1 gallon (3.8 L) of cool, dechlorinated water. Stir occasionally or use gentle aeration and steep for up to four hours. Strain through a fine-mesh bag if necessary, then apply the liquid to the soil the same day. Avoid warm or hot water, and do not store the finished extraction.

Leftover grounds: Place the strained grounds beneath mulch, add them sparingly to a worm bin, or combine them with compost and a dry carbon source such as shredded leaves or plain cardboard.

Best practice: Use moderate amounts and avoid leaving thick layers of wet barley flour on the soil surface, where they may encourage mold or attract pests.

When to use Malted Barley

Malted Barley can be used during vegetative growth, flowering, fruiting, or between crop cycles.

It is suitable for:

  • Living-soil and no-till containers.

  • Raised beds and outdoor gardens.

  • Houseplants and indoor gardens.

  • Market gardens and greenhouse beds.

  • Vegetables, herbs, flowers, fruiting plants, ornamentals, and cannabis.

Consistent, moderate applications are preferable to applying a large amount at once.

Storage

Store Malted Barley sealed in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, excessive heat, moisture, and storage pests.

Do not use barley that develops a stale, rancid, moldy, or otherwise unusual odor.
